NUCLEAR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION ‘NIA’ REPORT STAKES CLAIM FOR NUCLEAR IN A NET ZERO ECONOMY

The NIA report, ‘Forty by ’50: The Nuclear Roadmap’ claims that nuclear power from a programme of new power stations could provide 40% of clean power by 2050, create hydrogen and other clean fuels and run district heating networks, with the potential for 300,000 jobs and £33 billion of added value.

This is the nuclear industry’s pitch to catch the coat tails of the debate on the Green Recovery, and sets out its claims to be able to deliver power at lower prices that the first power stations as more are commissioned, and to be able to deliver some of the jobs that will be an increasing focus of government attention as the economic effects of COVID-19 take hold. It notes that demand for electricity could surge as fossil fuel are phased out, cars electrified and domestic heating overhauled.
